How Do I Apply for Industry-Based Learning?

If you wish to apply for an Industry-Based Learning placement in the following areas:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Biotechnology
  • Multimedia

you must be aware of, and follow, the procedures listed below:

Step 1 - Attendance at Compulsory Information Session
You must attend a compulsory information session. Information sessions are normally held in March and July. Details of the compulsory information sessions will be promoted via noticeboards around the Faculty and on-line at www.swin.edu.au/bsee/ibl/infosessions.htm.

Step 2 - Registration
At the compulsory information session you will receive a registration form. The registration form must be completed and submitted at the compulsory information session. You will be advised accordingly if you are NOT eligible to undertake Industry-Based Learning. Late applications to register will not normally be considered.

Step 3 - Eligibility
Academic eligibility for Industry-Based Learning will be determined as follows:

  • Single degrees: Multimedia & Biomedical Sciences
IBL is scheduled after 2nd year (4th academic semester).
Students must have completed 200 credit points of their course.
Students who are unsuccessful in gaining a placement at this time may commence IBL in 2nd semester (after 5th academic semester) provided they registered to go on IBL at the Information Session and meet the academic standards.

  • Double degrees: with Engineering
Students are subject to the same rules above if they are undertaking IBL in a position relevant to the first degree mentioned.
Students who wish to undertake IBL in a position relevant to the second named degree, do so after the completion of 3 ½ years (7th academic semester) and must have completed 350 credit points.
Students who are unsuccessful in gaining a placement at this time may commence IBL in 1st semester (after 8th academic semester) provided they registered to go on IBL at the Information Session and meet the academic standards.

Student eligibility to take up their placement will be confirmed by Industry-Based Learning Office after the publication of results each semester (preceding commencement of IBL). Accordingly, a student will take IBL when it falls due as part of their course structure, and will forgo the opportunity to undertake IBL if not taken at this time.

Under no circumstances will a student be permitted to undertake IBL at the completion of their full academic load.

Step 4 - Placement
You must prepare and submit via e-mail to the Industry-Based Learning Co-ordinator a curriculum vitae (CV).

Once your eligibility has been confirmed by the Industry-Based Learning Office you will be enrolled in the Industry-Based Learning Pre-Placement subject, HET200. This is a fee-free, credit point free subject that will give you access to Blackboard.

Position descriptions will generally be posted on Blackboard (subject HET200). If you are interested in any placements you see on Blackboard you should e-mail the Industry-Based Learning Co-ordinator stating your interest.

The Manager, Industry Liaision and the Industry-Based Learning Co-ordinator will co-ordinate the selection process, shortlisitng for each placement and forwarding your CV to the employer.

The selection process may vary between employers. The decision to employ you is made by the employer. It is your responsibility, once you have accepted a placement either verbally or (preferably) in writing, to honour that commitment. Should you renege on an accepted offer, you will not be permitted to undertake another Industry-Based Learning placement.
