MEI recognised for excellence in entrepreneurship at global awards
21 January 2010
The Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (MEI) program has won the first runner-up award in the Global Entrepreneurship Education category of the recent 2010 United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards.
USASBE is the largest association of entrepreneurship educators worldwide, and the awards are regarded by USASBE President Professor Michael Morris as “the most rigorous entrepreneurship education awards in the world”.
Swinburne's submission was put together by Outgoing MEI Program Coordinator Dr Alex Maritz, together with outgoing AGSE Director Emeritus Professor Murray Gillin. Dr Maritz was tasked with pitching to the judges in the finals of the awards event, of which the MEI was the only postgraduate program represented. The judges were particularly impressed by the unique qualities of the MEI, including theory for practice's sake, pracademic integration, innovative pedagogy, student outcomes and assurance of learning.
"This award once again highlights the global recognition that the MEI program has received in the field of entrepreneurship education, having previously received acclaim for being the top postgraduate program in entrepreneurship education in the southern hemisphere and Southeast Asia by the Roundtable for Entrepreneurship Educators, Stanford Technology Ventures in 2008," Dr Maritz said.
Criteria for the USASBE award centered around innovation and uniqueness of the program, quality and effectiveness, completeness and comprehensiveness, sustainability and transfereability on an international platform. The awards were presented at the assocation's annual conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The overall winner was the Center for Entrepreneurship Development, Univeridad ICESI, with the MEI from the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship and Queen’s University Management School, Belfast as runners up.
