The 8th APTEA (Australian Program of Training for Eur-Asia) Congress was hosted by Swinburne University from 30 January – 2 February 2008. More than 50 delegates from eastern Europe travelled to Melbourne to participate in the congress. As part of the centenary celebrations, a special Centenary Morning Tea was held for delegates on 1 February 2008. More information is available at the APTEA website. |

5th AGSE International Entrepreneurial Research Exchange |

The 5th AGSE International Entrepreneurship Research Exchange was held from 5-4 February, 2008 and returned to Swinburne University, the home of AGSE, as part of Centenary celebrations. More than 100 delegates from around the world participated in the exchange and a special Centenary message was delivered to delegates by Professor Russell Kenley, Director of AGSE, during the Awards Dinner on 7th February, 2008. |

As part of the Swinburne Centenary celebrations, the University commissioned a history of the institution. Written by Swinburne historian, Peter Love, with assistance from Sara Jervis (Coordinator – Swinburne History and Artefacts) the book gives a wonderful insight into the history of the institution. The book was officially launched as one of the first celebrations on 18 February 2008.More information on purchasing the book is available at the Swinburne Bookshop. |

Centenary celebrations hosted by Professor Ian Young, Vice-Chancellor and President, were held in Vietnam to acknowledge 100 years of Swinburne. The festivities were aligned with the celebration of 10 years of the locally delivered Master of International Accounting (MIntA), and marked the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam. Staff from Melbourne and Swinburne Sarawak attended the events, including Mr Alistair Crozier (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, TAFE Division), Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen (Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Swinburne Sarawak) and Associate Professor Patricia Buckley (Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business and Enterprise). The Hon. Bill Twedell, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam and Professor Tran Van Nhung, Vice Minister of Education and Training, MOET Vietnam were specials guests at the Hanoi event held on 22 February 2008. The Ho Chi Minh City event was held on 25 February 2008 and Mr Mal Skelly, Australian Consul-General in Ho Chi Minh City was the special guest. The events were proudly sponsored by CPA Australia and ACCA Vietnam. |

To celebrate Swinburne’s Centenary, the School of Arts, Hospitality and Sciences presented an exquisite six-course meal and entertainment as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. The dinner highlighted Swinburne’s long history with the Mitchell Family of the Yarra Valley, the most famous member being Helen Porter Mitchell – otherwise known as Dame Nellie Melba – and the magnificent synergies between music, land, art, food and wine. |

Centenary Beach Party for Students |

Swinburne Student Amenities Association (SSAA) celebrated Swinburne’s centenary with a Beach Party at ROOM Nightclub on 14 March 2008. Students were encouraged to don their best beach wear and that they did! Around 1,600 students danced the night away to the tunes of John Course and some of Melbourne's finest DJs. It was a fabulous way to bring in the new uni year and to celebrate Swinburne's centenary. |

Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ian Young hosted a well-attended Centenary Alumni Cocktail event in Singapore on 29 March 2008. His Excellency, the Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, Mr Miles Kupa was also in attendance, and during the festivities, a banner congratulating Swinburne on 100 years was received by the Vice-Chancellor from its partner institution Executive Counselling Training Academy. To top off the afternoon, a champagne-cork popping ceremony demonstrated the traditional Singaporean toast: "YUMSENG!" ("Bottoms up!" in English). Special thanks go to ECTA management and staff for their support and participation. |

Ahmedabad, Chennai and Delhi were the latest cities to host Swinburne Centenary celebration events. Agents and alumni alike were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet with Swinburne staff and forge closer relationships in a non-business setting. Alistair Crozier, Deputy Vice-Chancellor TAFE Division, said it was terrific to have representatives from Austrade in attendance, including Mike Moignard, Austrade’s Senior Trade Commissioner in Delhi. Senior representatives from the Australian Consulate-General also attended the centenary event in Chennai. |

The Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Awards for 2007 were presented at a ceremony held at the Camberwell Civic Centre on 7 April 2008. The awards recognise the contributions of excellence made by individuals and teams within the university. In Swinburne's centenary year more than 200 guests attended the ceremony and 25 awards were presented. |

Swinburne’s founder and visionary, George Swinburne could see “….no other method of giving equal opportunity better than increasing the facilities of education.” In keeping with this belief and to make higher education accessible for those most in need of assistance, Swinburne has, in its Centenary year, awarded a range of scholarships to deserving recipients. Swinburne’s Golden Key International Honour Society |

Swinburne launched a chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society in October 2006. As it celebrated its second birthday and as part of centenary celebrations, a new member induction ceremony and reception was held on 14 April to welcome more than 90 new members. ECIU General Meeting & Executive Board Meeting |

The ECIU partnership was established in 1997 and registered as a Foundation under Dutch law with 11 European members and 3 associate partners (from Mexico, Australia and Russia). The total number of students and staff within the Consortium is 370,000 and 50,000 respectively. Swinburne is the only Australian university to become a member of ECIU. In its centenary year, Swinburne University hosted the 2008 ECIU General Meeting and Executive Board Meeting. The events were conducted at Swinburne’s Sarawak (Malaysia) and Hawthorn (Australia) campuses. Members travelled to Sarawak to visit Swinburne’s offshore branch campus and then journeyed to Melbourne to conclude its meetings. A Centenary Dinner was held for ECIU members on 16 April 2008 at the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) at Swinburne’s Prahran Campus. |

In continuing Swinburne's Centenary Celebrations, the Department of Arts and the School of Arts, Hospitality & Sciences proudly presented a performance of “OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR”. In 1914 the army came to town and wanted one thing - YOU! By 1919 millions of the recruits who left their families, friends and workplaces had died in service. Australia lost a generation of its youth and proportionately suffered more fatal casualties than any other allied nation. The Pro Vice-Chancellor (International and Recruitment), Mr Jeffrey Smart, hosted a well-attended Centenary Alumni cocktail event in Bangkok, Thailand on 20 June 2008. Ms Anne Reynolds, Counsellor (Education, Science and Training), of the Australian Embassy in Bangkok was in attendance and offered her congratulations to Swinburne on achieving its centenary. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for Swinburne Alumni and supporters in Bangkok to reconnect with the university and renew friendships and networks. Swinburne celebrated its 100th birthday on the 8 July. The Eastern Suburbs Technical College was established on the this day in 1908 by local politician George Swinburne and enrolled 80 students in its first term. The Vice-Chancellor invited all staff to attend centenary morning teas being held at all Melbourne campuses. |

As part of Open Day activities at our Prahran campus on 17 August 2008, Swinburne was proud to screen a DVD depicting images from the Mechanics' Institute to the incredible campus it is today. 'A Centenary of Swinburne at Prahran, the DVD' highlighted the campus' diversity, from Marketing & Media, the Faculty of Design, the School of Hospitality, Arts and Sciences, the School of Social Sciences and the National Institute of Circus Arts just to name a few. Creator of the DVD, Mike Hamilton, is a sessional teacher in Marketing and Media who has produced and directed numerous documentaries and short films for The Nine and Seven Networks as well as Discovery and National Geographic. Historian Nanette Carter curated Pen to Pixel, which exhibited from 17 July–3 August 2008 at Chapel off Chapel. |

Women’s suffrage in Victoria was protracted and bitterly contested. Pat Grimshaw is an expert on the struggle for suffrage in the Antipodes, including Victoria and New Zealand. She is the Max Crawford Professor of History at the University of Melbourne, and is currently working on a book entitled Balancing Acts: Women, Breadwinning and Childcare in Twentieth Century Australia. |

Grand Opening Ceremony: Swinburne Sarawak Expanded Campus |

Swinburne Sarawak’s expanded campus was officially declared open with the lighting of a flame cauldron by Chief Minister of Sarawak and Pro Chancellor of Swinburne Sarawak, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud and Swinburne Chancellor Bill Scales (AO). More than 800 Malaysian and international dignitaries attended the ceremony, including Penny Williams, High Commissioner of Australia to Malaysia. The Sarawak expansion comes just after an audit by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) indicated the quality of degrees offered at Sarawak are on par with international standards expected in Australia.

On the afternoon of 19 September 1908, a large crowd of dignitaries assembled at John Street, Hawthorn for the laying of the Foundation Stone of The Eastern Suburbs Technical College, following its establishment on 8 July 1908. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of this event during Swinburne's Centenary year, a Ceremony was held on the investiture of a Centenary Time Capsule. |

On the evening of 25 September 2008, more than 60 guests attended Swinburne’s Centenary Alumni Cocktail Function held at the Kempinski Hotel in Beijing. Ms Kay Lipson, Dean, Faculty of Higher Education, Lilydale made an eloquent speech on Swinburne reaching 100 years of establishment, followed by Mr Iain Watt, Minister Counsellor (Education), AEI at the Australian Embassy in Beijing who spoke on behalf of the Australian Government. Special thanks go to the Australian Chinese Alumni Association (ACAA) for their generous support and assistance with the event. |

2008 is the centenary of the Richmond Football Club, and the sesquicentenary of Australian Rules. Our distinguished speaker on the eve of the 2008 Grand Final was Geoffrey Blainey, the author of A Game of Our Own: The Origins of Australian Football (1990). He is also the author of 36 other books, including The Tyranny of Distance (1966) and A Short History of the World (2000). |

The new National Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Design at Swinburne’s Wantirna campus was officially opened at 11.00am on Tuesday 14 October by the Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation Jacinta Allan. Vice-Chancellor Ian Young attended the ceremony along with Swinburne Council members, senior staff and representatives from local councils, secondary schools and industry. The new building was specifically designed with many environmentally sustainable features including a 90,000 litre water tank, solar panels, natural ventilation and lighting systems. Reclaimed materials have been used in the building and in the construction process. A commemorative centenary garden was also planted following the official opening of the centre and 300 trees indigenous to the local area were given away during a special centenary celebration for staff and students. |

Paul Ramadge: Australia and the US |
||||||||||

As one of The Age's most senior editors, Paul works on most aspects of the paper's content, from developing and polishing news lists to mounting investigations and campaigns, launching new sections, managing senior writers and developing circulation strategies. Since joining The Age as night editor in 1996, Paul has held the positions of assistant editor (news), executive editor and Saturday editor. He also edited the newspaper's inspirational and Walkley Award-winning coverage of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Paul Ramadge was appointed senior deputy editor in December 2005 and in September 2008 he was appointed editor-in-chief. The Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies (FICT) is justly proud of the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) program, one of Australia’s most prestigious IT courses. The program has now been running for 20 years and has produced over 600 graduates. By offering state of the art skills in the field of Business Information Technology, graduates of the program go on to achieve one of the highest employment rates of all IT courses in Australia. To celebrate this milestone and Swinburne's Centenary, FICT hosted a celebratory dinner on Wednesday 23 October for the BIT Alumni, the employers who have been generous sponsors of the program and FICT staff who have been involved in the academic and administrative aspects of this highly successful course. |

The Fisher Labor Government laid the foundations of the modern welfare state, and was the first majority national Labour Party government in the world. David Day is Fisher’s biographer. He is also the biographer of Chifley and Curtin, the author of Conquest: How Societies Overwhelm Others (2008), Honorary Associate at La Trobe University and visiting professor at the University of Aberdeen. |

Sir Rod Eddington: Infrastructure in Australia |

Sir Rod Eddington is a Rhodes Scholar. He completed a thesis on thermodynamics to earn an engineering doctorate from Oxford University and then taught there for two years, has led three airlines including British Airways, sits on the boards of companies including News Corp and Rio Tinto, and has advised both the Blair Government in the UK, and the Bracks Government in Victoria. Sir Rod was knighted in 2005 for resurrecting British Airways' fortunes. As Chair of Infrastructure Australia, Sir Rod presented a landmark report in April, 2008, on the future shape of Melbourne’s transport system - Investing in Transport: East West Link Needs Assessment. It was the first time the challenges and opportunities for Melbourne’s east-to-west transport corridor had been comprehensively assessed. Sir Rod presented his views on infrastructure in Australia. |

More than 50 guests attended Swinburne’s Centenary Alumni Cocktail Function held at the Park Lane Hotel in Hong Kong on 5 December 2008. Mr Mark Wood, Australian Trade Commissioner Australian Embassy in Hong Kong spoke on behalf of the Australian Government, followed by a speech by Mr. Terence Yap, Alumnus and President of the Swinburne Hong Kong Alumni Association on the significance of his student experience at Swinburne. The event was fortunate to have as additional special guests, a group of Melbourne students visiting Hong Kong under Swinburne’s Future Leaders Program, a study tour in which high achieving students are given the opportunity to explore leadership concepts in an international context.

To celebrate Swinburne's centenary, we invited Principals from key feeder schools to join our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Young, and other key academic and administrative staff. The dinner provided Principals with the opportunity to network with other Principals from Victorian secondary schools and hear more about Swinburne's 2015 vision. |
