Business Insight Program

What is a Business Insight Program

The Business Insight Program provides an opportunity for selected students to visit an organisation in order to gain a deeper understanding of its operations, career paths and specific job functions.

The program provides an excellent opportunity for the host organisation to raise their profile, strengthen company branding and meet with a group of prospective graduate employees. It also enables some free in-house professional development for staff.

The Proposal

The proposal is to give a team of 6 to 12 students (flexible) the opportunity to experience your workplace for several hours and to gain specialised knowledge and tips from business professionals within the different areas of the organisation. The program aims to provide an insight into some of the job functions and activities that are carried out by your employees on a daily basis.

Suggested Program

Current members of your staff will meet and greet the students, give a presentation about your organisation.

1. The following areas may be suitable areas for discussion or presentation to the students:

  • Organisational structure and functions
  • Human resources
  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • IT
  • Management
  • Sales / Customer Service
  • Services / Manufacturing / Production
  • Qualification required to join your department / organisation
  • Your recruitment process
  • The type of applications that impress your recruitment staff
  • The things which matter at the job interview
  • Career paths within the organisation
  • The difference between Graduate and Entry Level roles

2. At the end of the introduction / presentation, students may be taken on a tour of the workplace and given the opportunity to observe how specific staff work, the interaction between staff, the function of each department and how productivity takes place. Each student will be informed about the importance of confidentiality and if needed can be asked to sign an agreement before this observation exercise takes place. An alternative would be to match each student with one of your employees and allow the student to undertake an informational one-on-one meeting with that staff member. This would take approximately 30 minutes with the student asking a series of questions about your employee's role, their education and training and how they obtained their job. The idea is to understand how employees achieve their career aspirations and an overview of job functions.
