"Swinburne student launches doggy day care centre"

Former Swinburne student and professional dog trainer Ms Sally Chan launched, DogZone in Richmond, Melbourne on 24 October 2002.

DogZone is believed be Australia’s first day care centre for dogs and offers state-of-the-art facilities for canines, including specially themed play areas, a lounge with couches and bright coloured cushions and a bedroom complete with doggy beds. It also has full grooming and washing facilities.

Up to forty dogs can be cared for by Ms Chan and her staff, with owners able to check on their dog during the day via web
cameras set up on the premises.

Ms Chan first came up with her doggy day care idea about three years ago after talking to dog owners who wanted somewhere to leave their dog either while they worked long hours, undertook house renovations or had tradespeople in their
homes. "I decided it was a business opportunity worth exploring and quickly discovered there was nothing like it in Australia," she
said.

While Ms Chan had seven years experience in training dogs, she realised she needed some business expertise to put her plan
into action so she enrolled in an Advanced Diploma in Business Marketing at Swinburne. During her course, Ms Chan and
two fellow students teamed up to enter the DogZone business idea in Swinburne’s Venture Cup, an annual business plan
competition for students. They won a major category of the competition and Ms Chan put her share of the $10,000 winnings
towards setting up DogZone.

Ms Chan is confident that DogZone will be successful and is considering expanding her the business into other states in Australia.
