The Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing is dedicated to inspiring a fascination in the Universe through research and education. The Centre is one of the newest and most rapidly growing research centres in Australia. It operates a significant supercomputing facility and a virtual reality theatre. It concentrates on problems in astrophysics that benefit from these unique resources. The Centre employs a radical approach of broadening its funding base through a combination of traditional research grants, commercial work, online teaching and University support which has led to spectacular growth since its formation in 1998. With a strong public outreach and education programme and unique Internet based education initiatives, the Centre's research activities incorporate computational, theoretical and observational astronomy.
Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing research spans the entire electromagnetic spectrum, covering computational, theoretical and observational astronomy. Priority research areas include galaxy evolution & cosmology, globular clusters, pulsars, star & planet formation, Square Kilometre Array simulations, and astronomy visualisation.
Centre for Molecular Simulation
The Centre for Molecular Simulation (CMS) is an important contributor to computational science degrees offered by Swinburne University. The goal of the centre is to develop and use molecular simulation to provide fundamental insights into natural phenomena at the atomic level.
The research of the Centre is unique among computer science departments in Australian Universities. The main focus of its activities is the application of computing methods to solve research problems in the physical sciences and engineering. Consequently, a multidisciplinary approach is used with input from the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry and chemical engineering in addition to computer science. Work is currently being conducted on aspects of molecular simulation, phase transitions, membrane equilibria, ionic fluids, polymer science and nanotechnology.
