Course Description

The MIT program provides a wide scope for IT specialists or recent graduates wishing to optimise their career path. Students may choose the Network Design and Security specialisation and undertake focused studies in this area as part of their course.

Currently the Master of Information Technology offers subjects in the following broad areas:

  • Internet computing
  • Advanced Java and J2EE
  • Reliable software systems
  • Information systems modelling and development
  • Enterprise and systems architecture
  • eCommerce systems
  • Information systems management
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Network design and security
  • .NET technology
  • Computer networks
  • Object-oriented software development.
  • Service Orientated Computing

Note: Students also have the opportunity to undertake a research project.


Aims and Objectives

  • This program is aimed to suit the needs of recent graduates pursuing advanced IT studies, and also experienced IT professionals seeking to extend or update their knowledge.
  • The program provides students with a broad range of studies enabling selection of subjects across a wide spectrum of disciplines.


Specialisations

The network design and security specialisation focuses on the skills required for graduates preparing to work as network systems specialists. Subjects provide coverage of general networking principles with specific competencies including certification material from Cisco CCNA, CCNP and Microsoft MCSE.

Students will be required to choose 6 or more of the following subjects as part of their studies:

  • Internet Networking Infrastructure
  • Internet Security
  • Internetworking Technology
  • Enterprise Networking
  • Network Security
  • Networks and Routing
  • Network Administration

Entrance Requirements

A degree or a graduate diploma (or equivalent) in a relevant IT discipline from a recognised tertiary institution or approved equivalent..

Students holding a degree in non-IT disciplines generally undertake the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology prior to commencing the Masters program.

Students transferring from incomplete Masters courses commenced elsewhere may be eligible for credit.


Program Structure

The MIT allows choice of 8 subjects and is the equivalent to 1 year of full-time study. Entry is possible in both Semester 1 (Feb) and Semester 2 (July).

Postgraduate elective subjects are classified as Level 2 or 3. Students must complete at least 75 credit points of Level 3 subjects, and up to 25 credit points of Level 2 subjects for a total of 100 credit points.
