Networks and Telecommunications
The telecommunications industry provides the backbone for communication needs within business. It is a multi-billion dollar industry that employs close to one hundred thousand people in Australia. Networking specialists and telecommunications engineers design, construct, commission and support the telecommunication equipment and systems that facilitate the transfer of information between end points e.g. telephone, facsimile, Internet, satellite, video and wireless networking.
The 21st Centur y has been defined by new technology and innovations that have changed the economic landscape. The growth in mobility and wireless connectivity means that information is available anywhere and this phenomenon is most clear in the area of networks and telecommunications. Already your phone, car and fridge may use the Internet. Communication continues to advance with new technological devices providing services such as high speed broadband access/ADSL, VoIP and other yet to be developed service enhancements.
A network or telecommunications engineer designs, implements and facilitates the communication infrastructure of today’s business ensuring information flow is not interrupted or slowed. Network engineers are some of the most highly paid professional specialists in the world. Security specialists manage and maintain the security of an organisations’ information system infrastructure by providing defenses against intrusions, hackers and viruses. Security is the most rapidly expanding field in ICT, and requires a deep knowledge of networks.
