Call for Papers or Presentations
All interested parties are invited to submit proposals for presentations to the Eighth Melbourne Computing Education Conventicle (MCEC2011). The Conventicle is a one day conference (Friday, 18 November) that aims to support academics teaching in the IT discipline, or using computer technology in their teaching. It will provide an opportunity for sharing ideas and for the development of collaborations.
This year we plan to hold a half-day Doctoral Symposium on the afternoon of Thursday 17th November. This will provide a forum for those undertaking Doctoral studies in any area of Computing Education to network with other PhD students in the area, to get advice on their PhD progress from experienced academics in the area of Computing Education, and to potentially identify some new collaborators for their research. Each doctoral symposium participant will be asked to give a short presentation on their PhD topic, progress to date, and their current plan to completion. This will be briefly critiqued by another student in the audience, and then will be discussed among all participants with a view to constructive feedback, advice and support.
The Doctoral Symposium will be chaired by Prof. John Grundy, a very experienced supervisor (over 20 PhD students and over 30 Masters by research students), a researcher in Software Engineering, and also an experienced educator and educational researcher. We will have 2-3 other experienced PhD supervisors and computing education researchers as panel members, along with a recent PhD graduate to share their experiences of building a research profile during and after PhD studies.
Conventicle Submissions
We are planning an interactive and engaging event, with sessions in a variety of formats and focussed on any aspect of IT education. We are seeking proposals for people to lead or participate in (or just suggest an idea for) any of the following:
- open forum or group discussion
- panel session
- demonstration of a teaching tool or technique
- presentation of a recently published or accepted conference or journal paper;
- older paper of topical interest;
All proposals submitted will be considered by the MCEC Organising Committee. The primary criteria for selection will be the potential interest of the presentation to the Conventicle audience. While it is expected that the majority of attendees will be academics from the Melbourne area, submissions are also welcome from interstate.
To submit a proposal:
- Email a copy of your proposal in Word or PDF format to mcec2011@swin.edu.au
- Indicate any role you wish to play (e.g. member of a panel, lead a discussion, demonstrate a tool, present a paper)
- If relevant, please provide details of the conference or journal to which your paper was accepted and the name and contact details of the person who will present the paper at MCEC2011.
To register for Doctoral Symposium
