Abstract:

Its now 20 years since Australia had its first permanent Internet connection. This link was a result of a virtually unprecedented level of cooperation across the entire Australian Higher Education and Research Sector, and also included a broad base of industry support. This project, the Australian Academic and Research Network, or AARNet is 20 years old this year.

Geoff Huston, the leading instigator of the initial phase of AARNet will talk about the early days of AARNet, and look at the networking environment of the late 80's and the way in which AARnet was able to make a revolutionary impact on the environment at the time as both a facility for academics and reseachers and a catalyst in innovation in networking services that subsequently spilled over into the mainstream of the communications industry. He will then contrast this period with the current challenges in networking architectures and take a personal peek at the futures for networking and the ways in which further innovation could impact on the next generation of networks and services.
