Dr Syed Masood is a Professor and the Research Leader of CAD/CAM/CAE and Rapid Prototyping (RP) research group. He has also been the Program Coordinator of postgraduate Master of Engineering programs in Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and CIM. He joined Swinburne in 1988 and has previously taught at Central Queensland University and PNG University of Technology and also served as a Visiting Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Prof Masood has undertaken and directed research in the areas of Computer Aided Design and Engineering, rapid prototyping (RP), advanced manufacturing processes, and polymer material development at Swinburne. He has provided strong leadership in establishing research concentration in CAD/CAM/CAE and rapid prototyping with several grants and research projects in these areas. He has won external research grants totalling over A$2.4 million from ARC, DIST, DEET, CRC-IMST, CRC Micro-technology and industry. Up until 2005, Prof Masood has published over 155 research papers in international journals, conferences and book chapters. He has already supervised to completion 7 PhDs and 10 MEng by research students, and over 50 MEng (CIM) research projects, many in CAD/CAM and advanced manufacturing technologies areas, at Swinburne. He has led international collaborative research projects with China, Indonesia, USA and international IMS test case project on Rapid Product Development. He has led several industry sponsored projects with leading companies like Ford, Moldflow, Visy Plastics, AW Bell, Alloyfab, Baroda and Warman International. He is an Editor of the International Journal of CAD/CAM, and has been an Associate Editor of International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Systems. He has been elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Member of Society of Plastics Engineers, USA and Member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers USA.
