Loan Conditions of Swinburne Library

The University Library supports the Swinburne University community by providing services, collections and a pleasant environment that is conducive to study and research.  The library loan conditions have been created in accordance with the Library Use Policy to ensure that all borrowers have equitable access to the library’s collection.

Who can borrow from the Library?

Current categories of borrowers include:

  • Currently enrolled full-time and part-time students of Swinburne University of Technology
  • Full-time and part-time staff of Swinburne University of Technology
  • Members of the University Council
  • Approved CAVAL, University Library Australia  and TAFE Reciprocal Borrowers
  • Members of the Swinburne Library Information Service and Alumni Association (fees apply)
  • Individuals or members of organizations approved as special borrowers by the Director, Information Resources

What borrowers should know before they borrow

The loan conditions are

  1. Loans are available only on presentation of a current Swinburne identity card, or approved borrower card.
  2. Cards are not transferable, i.e. they cannot be used by another person.
  3. Lost cards must be reported and replaced immediately
  4. By borrowing from the library all borrowers automatically accept borrowers’ responsibilities as defined in the Library Use Policy and Code of Conduct
  5. Material borrowed must be returned or renewed on or before the due date and time as indicated on the loan receipt slip.
  6. Borrowers must accept personal responsibility for the care of all items borrowed with their library card, and for their return in good condition to Swinburne Library
  7. All items must be borrowed at the appropriate service desk before borrowers leave the Library.
  8. Most items from Reserve Collections are available for use in the library only and should not be taken out of the Library.
  9. Items borrowed should normally be returned through the appropriate return chutes.
  10. Overdue items should be returned to the Service desk inside the Library so that borrowers may pay any fine that is owing.
  11. If an item is lost or damaged borrowers must report this to the Service Desk immediately. Any item that is not returned within six weeks of the due date, or by the end of the academic year in which it was borrowed, whichever occurs sooner, will be considered as lost. The borrower will be responsible for either the replacement cost plus an administration charge of $20 plus GST, or for the cost of its repair. There could be additional charges imposed if the lost items charges are not paid within the specified period from the date an invoice has been issued.
  12. The library may recall an item in high demand before it is due for return. You must return the item by the new date specified. Failure to do so will attract an increased fine.
  13. Swinburne employees must obtain a library clearance before leaving employment with Swinburne to show that all outstanding material has been returned and all penalties resolved.

Penalties for breaching loan conditions

These penalties apply to breaching loan conditions when borrowing from Swinburne Library and may apply to borrowing from other college and university libraries that participate in reciprocal borrowing schemes.

Fines apply for late return of borrowed resources.

Borrowing privileges will be suspended while loans, fines and other charges are outstanding.

Penalties and fines for late returns are detailed on the library’s Overdue penalties and fines web page.

Further information is available in the Library Use Policy.
