Quicksearch journal databases using Supersearch

  • This quicksearch option searches across a number of journal databases.
  • It is useful for conducting an introductory search on a topic.
  • To link to the full-text of articles (if available), click on the SFX button :

Quicksearch will often retrieve a large number of hits. If you need to conduct a more sophisticated search, try searching one or more of the individual databases listed below :

  • EBSCOhost databases
    These databases can be searched separately or together.
    • Academic Search Complete
      Multi-disciplinary database, includes full text articles on environment and ecology.
    • GreenFILE
      GreenFILE is a database of articles and web pages covering all aspects of human impact and the environment. GreenFILE indexes nearly 300,000 journal articles as well as linking to more than 4,600 web pages.
    • EJS - E-journals
      Over 300 journals available in full text and thousands more indexed. Subjects include agriculture, fisheries, forestry, geology.
    • ANR - Index. Agriculture and Natural Resources Index. Formerly ABOA and Streamline.
    • ANR - Index Archive. Agriculture and Natural Resources Index Archive
    • ANR - Research. Agriculture and Natural Resources Research
    • ANR - Research Archive. Agriculture and Natural Resources Research Archive
    • SAGE Science and Geography Education.
  • Gale databases
    These databases can be searched separately or together.
    • Academic OneFile - A major academic database with varied sources covering a range of subjects.
    • Expanded Academic ASAP - Over 3500 different titles going back 20 years, with many available in full text. 2100 are peer-reviewed. Subjects covered include social sciences, humanities, education, science and technology.
    • Infotrac OneFile - A small database with mostly general material, however it contains a few titles that Academic OneFile lacks.
  • Ingenta Connect Gateway to online journals from a variety of publishers. Full text articles are available for titles subscribed to by Swinburne.
  • Oxford Reference Online
    Collection of online dictionaries and reference sources including Dictionaries of Earth Sciences, Ecology, Geography, Weather, Biology, and Zoology
  • ScienceDirect
    Full text articles from Elsevier journals. Topics include earth and environmental sciences.
  • Scopus
    World's largest abstract and indexing database. Use the SFX or Full-text buttons to link to the full-text on other databases. An excellent starting point.
  • Web of Science (Web of Knowledge)
    Multidisciplinary collection of indexing databases. Topics include environmental and plant sciences.
  • Wiley InterScience
    Full text articles from over 500 journals. Topics include ecology, environmental sciences, environmental management, plant and earth sciences, hydrology and sustainable development.

  • Online journals
    • Sustainable development - "...emphasising the need for interdisciplinary research into economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development. All contributions are peer-reviewed with the aim of providing readers with high quality, original material". Available from Vol 4 No 1 1996 to the present, mostly full text. Can be searched by Author, Title, Keywords, Funding agency etc.
    • International journal of sustainable development and world ecology - An interdisciplinary journal available through EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier, IngentaConnect and in paper form at the Hawthorn campus. Subscription commenced in 2003.
    • Ecology and society: a journal of integrative science for resilience and sustainability - “Ecology and Society is an electronic, peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary journal devoted to the rapid dissemination of current research”. Abstracts are available from the beginning in 1997, very good HTML full text access. Searchable by author, title, Index terms etc.
    • Environment, Development and Sustainability - “…an international and multidisciplinary journal covering all aspects of the environmental impacts of socio-economic development. It is also concerned with the complex interactions which occur between development and environment, and its purpose is to seek ways and means for achieving sustainability in all human activities aimed at such development”. Searchable by title, author, full text etc. March 1999 to the present. View articles in either HTML full text or PDF format.
    • Journal of sustainable product design - “…a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal that focuses on the theoretical, methodological and practical dimensions of moving towards sustainable and eco-product and service design and development”. March 2001 to June 2004 of this quarterly journal are available. Searchable by title, author, full text etc. View articles in either HTML full text or PDF format.
  • Sustainable development
    • Greening Australia - “Greening Australia tackles critical issues like salinity, declining water quality, soil degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss through an innovative blend of practical experience, science, community engagement and commitment”. Click on Victoria, click on the Tips and Tools section for fact sheets, a case study, guides and further links. From the main page, you can view the latest The Greening Australian (national edition) magazine.
    • Institute for Sustainable Futures - “We design (from project-based research) client-centred solutions that consider the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainability”. Many projects, articles and reports are available to view and freely download in PDF format.
    • The WWW Virtual Library - Sustainable Development page - This site is a directory of hundreds of links to worldwide information, organisations, activities & projects, electronic journals and online databases all dealing with sustainable development. Over 650 suggested links and features a useful “beginner's” set of links.
    • Global Footprint Network - Offers a measurement and management tool, as well as statistics to 2002 for global and national ecological footprints. The Standards established for this tool can be viewed.
    • Savewater! Water-saving products, programs, research and events. Covering saving water in: homes; gardens; businesses; agriculture; educational places and programs.
    • Water efficiency labelling and standards (WELS) scheme Run by the Australian Government. In their own words, "The WELS Scheme labels products for water efficiency, helping Australian households save water and money....Choosing more efficient products helps Australia save water".
  • Sustainable energy
    • Independent Power Producers's Society of Ontario - now known as The Association of Power Producers of Ontario - This site is a directory of information about alternate energy sources in Canada. Pages with information and further links are provided for the following technologies: Solar, Wind, Hydro, Co-generation, Biomass, Energy Services and lastly, District Energy.
    • Smart Communities Network (USA) - A site by the US Department of Energy. Go to the Site Index on the top menu and search from the detailed list of subjects/topics. A huge and thoroughly informative site with hundreds of case studies and success stories, often with extensive detail.
    • Sustainable Energy Authority (Victoria) - A merger of Sustainable Energy Authority Victoria and EcoRecycle Victoria. Provides links to the Sustainability Victoria Act 2005 (Act No. 65/2005) and to Victoria's Environmental Sustainability Framework.
    • The Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability (DEUS) - “The Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability (DEUS) promotes sustainable, safe, reliable and affordable energy and urban water in NSW”. There are a number of reports, statistics, plans and further links available from the left-hand-side menu: Energy & Greenhouse Programs, Product Services & Information Kits, Publications and lastly Water all contain relevant materials.
  • Sustainable farming
    • Biological Farmers of Australia - Industry reports, back issues of The Organic Advantage newsletter, limited access to Australian Organic Journal articles and many press releases are available through this website for organic farmers and certifier of the International organic standard. The companion site to it is Australian Certified Organic, which has a FAQ with some practical information freely accessible.
    • National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA) - This National Association provides Organic Certification and an online directory to suppliers and products. Their Organic Standard is available through their Steps to Certification page. The Resource Centre provides free information sheets and sample forms for organic producers to use.
    • Ohio State University Sustainable Agriculture page - A short directory of links to other sustainable agriculture web sites.
