Finding database articles

Do a quick search of law & legislation databases using Supersearch:

  • This quicksearch option searches across 10 law & legislation databases.
  • It is useful for conducting an introductory search on a topic.
  • To link to the full-text of articles (if available), click on the SFX button :
  • Alternately, search through the selection of databases in the section below.
  • (There are 41 different law & legislation databases and resources to try in Supersearch. To see them and select different options, select Categories from the Locate Databases menu, select Law from the Categories menu and ALL in the bottom Sub-Categories menu.)

Individual databases

  • AGIS Plus Text
    Based on the Attorney General's Information Service this database provides full text articles from Australian, New Zealand and Pacific law journals and selected articles from major US, UK and Canadian law journals. Covers all aspects of law.
  • APA-FT
    Australian Public Affairs Full Text indexes a wide range of periodicals, newspapers, scholarly journals, conference papers and books. Subject coverage includes business, health, current affairs, economics, humanities, law, literature, politics and social sciences.
  • CINCH
    Australian Criminology Database indexes and abstracts articles on all aspects of crime and criminal justice including corrections, crime, crime prevention, criminal law, criminology, juvenile justice, law enforcement, police and victims of crime.
  • Informit Search
    Select this link to search two or more of the three above databases (AGIS, APA-FT and CINCH) at once. Also excellent for lots of Australian scholarly material on the following subjects:

    * Engineering and technology
    * Health and medicine
  • AustLII
    The Australian Legal Information Institute publishes acts, regulations and cases for the Commonwealth and Australian states and territories. AustLII also provides links to Australian and world law resources on the Internet.
  • CCH Law Libraries
    A range of Australian legal publications and resources covering taxation, industrial law, corporations law, trade practices and consumer law, and human resource management. NB Access is only to active subscriptions. Other CCH products are shown in grey and are not available.
  • Law databases in Supersearch
    Search up to 10 resources at a time. At the PDS login screen enter your SIMS username (students) or 7-digit staff ID (staff) and password, then select Swinburne from the Institution dropdown list.
  • LexisNexis AU
    Access to selected full text Australian legal journals published by LexisNexis Legal Australia. Some of the titles are: Australian Law Reports, Victorian Reports, Employment and Industrial Law.
  • The Alternative Law Journal, through the Informit APA-FT database - To search this database, either: select a Guided search from the top four light grey tabs, change one of the drop down boxes from any field to journal title; type alternative law journal to the left and then do a search;
    or select a Standard search and type JT=(alternative law journal) in at the search box as well as another search word eg. indigenous AND JT=(alternative law journal). Alternative Law Journal is also available through another INFORMIT database, AGIS Plus Text.
  • Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre - EBSCOhost database.
    Contains leading Australian and New Zealand newspapers & magazines and a few international ones too, as well as some reference books in full text.

    Provides access to law and justice related information and services from all levels of government. Information about the Australian legal system and the government organisations that are part of the Australian legal system.
  • LegalOnline
    The Victorian Government's legal information website containing fact sheets, links to legal practitioners, relevant legislation and agencies.
  • WebLaw
    WebLaw is an Australian based web portal with annotated links to selected quality web sites. Links to specific aspects of the law including industrial law, corporations law, family law, human rights and more.
    In particular, there is an excellent page for European Union Law - also see the link to Europa in International Resources below.
  • Parliament of Australia Parliamentary Library – Law Internet resources
    Excellent gateway of links to information. Includes sections such as Terrorism law, Intellectual Property (IP) law, Family law, and relevant legislation.
  • Guides about How To Research (The Law Library, University of Adelaide)
    The explanations of terminology and abbreviations found when you click on the links in Caselaw can be directly applied to your studies at Swinburne. Ignore the rest.

  • AustLII Australian Legal Information Institute Databases
    Acts, Regulations and  Court Decisions for the Commonwealth and the States.
  • GovPubs Government publications for the Commonwealth, states and territories including:
  • LAWLEX
    Search for Australian legislation for the Commonweath, States and Territories. Includes a subject index to Legislation. Only basic features of this resource are available for use.
  • ScalePlus
    Commonwealth legislation. NB. No new material has been added since January 2005 although Current Compilations and Numbered Acts will be maintained. ScalePlus will soon be replaced by ComLaw (see immediately below)..
  • ComLaw became available online in January 2005. It will soon replace ScalePlus (as of March 2008, still not yet!).

  • THOMAS - "THOMAS contains a list of legislative and other government resources" - from the US Library of Congress.
  • Eur-lex, access to European Union law - "Direct, easy access free of charge to the biggest documentary holdings existing on EU law. The texts are arranged in collections – treaties, international agreements, legislation in force, legislation in preparation, case-law, parliamentary questions – which can be accessed via hyperlinks. For visitors who are less familiar with European questions, the site provides information on the institutions and Community law to make it easier for them to find the required data. It also includes explanations for the instruments that play a part in the production of Community legislation".
