Springvale Botanical Cemetery

Purpose/aim

Since 2008 the NCS has been working with Springvale Botanical Cemetery to undertake a range of sustainability initiatives including

  • Establishing robust baseline data to benchmark sustainability performance
  • Determination of annual production of greenhouse gas emissions for 2007/08 and 2008/09 financial years
  • Provision of recommendations with clearly identified opportunities for improvement
  • Development of quantitative targets and performance objectives within a sustainability strategy
  • Develop a comprehensive set of action plans to deliver the sustainability strategy
  • Role out a sustainability training program to ensure staff have the knowledge, capacity and tools carry out their daily work activities in line with the organisations sustainability aims

Background

Springvale Botanical Cemetery is the 5th largest cemetery in the world and provides services for one-third of all deaths in Victoria annually. Set on over 189 hectares of botanical gardens which are world renowned; the grounds reflect beauty and tranquillity which encourage visits not only out of necessity for funerals and visiting memorials, but also for the sheer passive enjoyment of the parklands with its changing seasonal beauty.

Project status

The Cemetery's second annual emissions inventory is currently under development.
