Living for our Future - City of Whitehorse

STATUS: COMPLETED

The Living for our Future program in the City of Whitehorse aimed to work with households to engage them towards more sustainable lifestyles, including:

  • reducing use of natural resources (energy, water);
  • reducing production of waste;
  • decreasing use of car transport;
  • increasing use of products made from recycled or non toxic materials and improve community engagement.

The program consisted of three series of four workshops over 2008/09, covering:

  • Energy in the Home
  • Waste and Sustainable Consumption
  • Healthy Homes and Transport
  • Water in the Home and Garden

The third series of workshops targeted the Chinese-speaking community in Whitehorse and the workshop and supporting handouts were delivered in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese). These workshops proved very popular and demonstrated the importance of providing information in a manner that reflects the cultural context of the community.

Participants in the Living for our Future workshops were invited to also take part in the Sustainable Ambassador program, which sought to take community members with a passion for sustainability and provide them with the knowledge and skills to be change agents within their local community.
