Knowledge Skills in Sustainability

Purpose/Aim

To build capacity of the workforce that results in behaviour change toward more sustainable business systems, business practices and business thinking. Establishment of guideline competency standards for sustainability was a pro-active measure to help position the VET sector for possible growth in demand for sustainability training in industry.

Embedding Sustainability into Industry Skills

NCS has worked to embed sustainability themes into national training packages associated with vocational education and training. This is demonstrated through a series of projects collectively known as ‘Knowledge and Skills for Sustainability’ through a staged approach:

  • Establishment of Guideline Competency Standards for Sustainability (GCSS) (2004)
  • Design of industry specific guideline briefs (2006)
  • Customisation of units of competency (2006)
  • Development of learner and trainer guides and facilitation of pilot training programs (2007 - ongoing)
  • Uptake and endorsement in several training packages/training sectors (2005 - ongoing)
