About Us

Student Development & Counselling Office, Hawthorn Campus

Our Mission

Swinburne University of Technology is committed to increasing and enhancing practices and educational opportunities for people with disabilities. This commitment is based on a philosophy of integration that characterises the University's approach to service provision. The Disability Support Service, operated by the Student Equity and Disabilty Services Unit, Student Services, ensures the application of this philosophy in assisting students to manage their studies effectively in the face of disability.

How we can help

Disability Liaison Officers are available on each campus and via telephone or email to assist students to access and fully participate in study by negotiating their support needs and clarifying the information that needs to be passed on to academic staff. All services are provided in accordance with the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and the Disability Standards for Education Act (2005).

In discussion with a Disability Liaison Officer, students are typically requested to provide information that will assist Swinburne in the planning and implementation of appropriate support services and reasonable adjustments for them. The Disability Liaison Officer will discuss with each student the ways the disability may impact on study in order to determine the appropriate services to be put in place. Once the appropriate services are identified, a Disability Access Plan will be developed and circulated. These services can also be reviewed at any time, particularly if the student's circumstances change.

This service is available to all currently enrolled students, at no charge.
