Q. Do I need an appointment to see the Doctor/Nurse?

A. It is usually necessary for you to make an appointment to see the Doctor. However, no appointment is required for you to see a nurse.
Please note that Doctors are only available at the Hawthorn Campus.


Q. What happens if I (1) miss an exam because of illness or (2) I am ill during an exam?

A. If because of the 'above' you wish to sit a Special Exam (1) or to apply for Special Consideration (2), you will need to obtain the necessary form from your Department Administration before consulting with the Doctor. On completion of the form, it will need to be submitted to you Department's Administrative Officer within three working days of the exam date.


Q. Where do I go for after hours medical care?

A. In case of an accident or emergency you need to go to your nearest public hospital. For general medical care you can look up the Yellow Pages telephone directory under Medical Practitioners to find a doctor near to your home. Most medical practitioners, if closed, will have a locum service number for you to contact.


Q. What happens if I don't have a Medicare/Medibank Private card?

A. If you don't have your Medicare card with you at the time of appointment the Health Service administrative staff can obtain the number by ringing Medicare. In turn the staff will assist you to apply for your own card for future use. If as an overseas student without a Medibank Private card (usually awaiting card or expired card) cash will need to be paid at the time of the consultation at the bulk billing rate. If awaiting card all expenditure will be able to be claimed once card has been received.
Please note that a Medicare/Medibank card is only required if you intend to see a Doctor. Visits to the Nurse are free and confidential.


Q. There are no doctor appointments (Hawthorn only) available what can the nurse do for me?

A. The Nurse can do a preliminary health assessment which includes checking your temperature, pulse and blood pressure. They can also provide you with first aid and health information. If you require prompt medical attention, the Nurse will negotiate this on your behalf. However, if your needs are less urgent, alternative arrangements will be discussed with you that will best meet your ongoing well-being.
